What is BMX Bike:There's more to these popular kids bikes than meets the eye

  • 2021-11-01 15:25:53

One of the most popular categories of children's bicycles is BMX, which stands for Bicycle Moto Cross. Although people usually use the BMX term ubiquitously, when you buy one, it’s important to understand that there are three different types of BMX bikes: real BMX bikes, freestyle bikes and off-road bikes or just "jumping" bikes.

What is the difference between all these different types of BMX bikes? This is what we are going to explain here. After reading this article, please visit the store and see the differences for yourself!

If you are not sure which type of BMX your child wants, ask the bike shop for the popular BMX type in your area, because they will most likely know which type your child likes the most. Or, you can ask friends of your son or daughter (if you think they can keep a secret).

Below are diagrams and instructions for the three different BMX types, as well as tips on how to choose the right bike. It should ensure that the two-wheeler you choose is suitable for your child. If you are still unsure, remember that if the bicycle has not been used, most bicycle retailers will be happy to exchange gift bicycles. Ask about this before buying a bicycle to double check.

BMX

The real BMX bicycle started in the late sixties. They are imitations of off-road motorcycles, designed for jumping in the dirt and bypassing berms. Soon, whether there are racers or not, there are children everywhere. BMX bikes are still designed for racing, although your child does not have to participate in the race to enjoy the light weight, speed and dirt resistance of these machines. In fact, many children mainly use them for school and home.

They usually have 20-inch wheels (except for the "Cruiser" with 24-inch wheels), multi-section tires, upright handlebars with crossbars, small saddles, long cranks, and rear handbrakes. The frame is light and strong, and the higher the price, the lighter these bikes are.

BMX bicycles are usually made of reliable chrome steel or aluminum. Chromoly frames are heavier and more economical. Aluminum frames are lighter and are usually made of oversized or shaped tubes. In addition to being lighter, aluminum is also rust-resistant. Therefore, if the frame is scratched, there is no need to rush to repair it.

BMX bicycles also have different frame sizes. The figure below shows an approximate fit based on the age of the rider. The final assembly is best done by a bicycle shop. Please note that Pro and Expert bikes are sometimes also available in XL (extra-long) sizes.

Freestyle

These entered the scene shortly after the BMX bike. Unlike competitions, the ideal use of freestyle bikes is for level skills, aggressive street riding, and getting vertical in skate parks. It is also a great bike for cycling to schools, shops and swimming pools.

On these models, ultra-sturdy construction is more important than light weight, which makes them a favorite of parents. The wheels are usually "mag" wheels made of sturdy nylon, or heavy-duty models with 48 steel spokes. The tires are 20 x 2.125 or wider and the treads are fairly smooth because they are mainly road impactors. Axle nails are usually included (the rider is standing on it performing stunts), although some manufacturers do not use them so that children can choose their own. Freestyle bicycles are equipped with front and rear brakes. The front cable is routed through a "rotor" or "unwinder" so that the handlebar can be fully rotated without being entangled with the brake cable.

Dirt Jumper

As the name suggests, the dirt jumper (also called jumper) is designed to take off from natural dirt mounds built by children with approach paths and landing zones. These bikes bridge the gap between BMX bikes and freestyle bikes (stronger than the former; lighter than the latter). They usually don't have front brakes, and their sturdy wheels usually have 36 sturdy No. 13 spokes instead of 48 spokes like a freestyle bicycle. They are occasionally equipped with 24-inch wheels, which are a great choice for larger riders. The tire has the most tread of all BMX types

If you have any questions about different types of bicycles and bicycles suitable for your child, the best way to learn more is to visit a bicycle retailer, where you can see some different bicycles to compare models. Let the dealer know what bike your child is currently riding, his age and height, and where he likes to ride, so that you can get the perfect gift smoothly.
